Balancing My Way Through Life

Doggone it!

Long story short. The people who surrendered Trudy and her brother Meatball took them wrong shelter. The ARL (Animal Rescue League) in-take person didn't catch the issue...then someone today realized the mistake. The other shelter wanted their puppies. It seems really silly, however if you know anything about animal shelters....Puppies are the bomb. They bring in the most money and the most people who want them. So alas Trudy has left us. We are doing ok, but she was a sweetie and we will miss her joy!

We drowned our sorrows in excellent Irish food.  My good friend owns a restaurant and we bought take out to support them.

Fish and chips (my friend also is donating a portion of the Fish and Chips sale (on Fridays) to the Knights of Columbus, since their fish fries were cancelled.
Shepard's Pie...We also got Reuben eggrolls and Scotch eggs.

Also I worked today for about 3 hours, then came home.  We don't need to stay if we get all the issues of the day resolved.  (I also started a continuing ed course.) Next week I will likely only need to go in one day.  (This week Tue/Fri)

Going for a walk in a little bit, then I am taking the afternoon off.  I am a little sad about losing sweet Trudy, so I am not going to spend the afternoon cleaning....unless if feels right later.

3/30/2020 WELCOME TRUDY

I went for a walk!!  :0)

I went to Aldi :0(  The store was great, but there was a lady there who was wearing a towel over her nose and mouth and it just screamed "panic" to me.

At 10:20 I received an email from the ARL (Animal Rescue League) looking for a foster family for Trudy or Meatball.  They are 10 week old (approximate) boxer mix pups.
I called Ken and at 12:00, Carolyn, Anna and I picked up Trudy!  We surprised Joel who was working with my sister for Confirmation (on the phone) from the time the email from the ARL until I had to leave to go get Trudy.  It was sooo great to see his face when he saw her!  We haven't told Matthew yet...he is in the basement...having started back to full time school today.

3/29/2020

Woke up around 5:30.  I blame the wind and the fact that I am just not as busy as I normally am.  More sitting than usual!

We are going to watch church together at 12:00 before Carolyn goes to work.  She then is off until Friday afternoon as school officially starts online tomorrow.  (at least the DMACC affiliated classes/AP). (DMACC=Des Moines Area Community College)

Carolyn and I started making her T-shirt quilt:

Here is the layout Carolyn chose....wish me luck!  I have done this once before....so that gives me a little confidence!

(August 2011 with my sweet niece J.  who is about to have a baby!!)

Ken and I went for a walk then convinced the troops to come outside and get fresh air.
We moved our basketball hoop to the cul-de-sac, because it doesn't get enough attention right against the house.  It is a bit of a pain here, because we will need to move it at night and be careful not to run into it :0)  That said, I felt SOOO much better after spending the afternoon outside.  Joel has a bit of a sunburn.  Ken and I did a bunch of spring landscaping.  (well....we cleaned up the rock beds around the house and he trimmed all the bushes!!)

Matthew and Anna prepped the garden.  Won't be able to plant for a long time, but it really was neglected this fall.

3/28/20

I woke up at 5:47 to make sure Carolyn got off to work at HyVee.  I sat with her while she had breakfast and off she went to make the essential coffee.  (She is at the Starbucks in the store, despite the fact that all the other Starbucks in town have closed.)  That said, she in a  big glass cage and safer than she would be as a checker.  I think they would expect her to return to checking if they closed Starbucks, so I am fine that they stay open...I guess.

Here are some funny changes to Classic literature that are changed for Covid19.

https://lithub.com/okay-now-the-last-lines-of-10-classic-novels-rewritten-for-social-distancing/

I think it would be better if they were from books that I had more recently.  I have read a handful off these lists, but LONG LONG ago.

I learned 2 new stitches FPDC and BPDC...which if you read how to do them, seems hard, but if you watch at video...easy peasy.

I went to work (despite clinic still being closed until now April 13 at the earliest (date was optimistically April 6 until today)), I read email, shipped earmolds to patients, put out a billing fire and did continuing education (not usually an "at work" thing).

Went for a walk....so happy this Covid19 didn't happen here in January.

Matthew and Anna made Pupusa for dinner.  The crazy thing is how similar it was to the recipe Joel made to take to Spanish class a couple weeks ago.  (Joel's didn't have beans, only cheese.) Matthew learned about this dish in his dorm cafeteria.....good thing the cafeteria food wasn't this good in the late 80s.

(from Wikipedia)
A pupusa is a thick flatbread from El Salvador made with cornmeal or rice flour, similar to the Venezuelan and Colombian arepa  (THIS WAS WHAT JOEL's RECIPE WAS CALLED!!!!). In El Salvador, it has officially been declared the national dish and has a specific day to celebrate it. It is usually stuffed with one or more ingredients

Ken added coconut shrimp and cheese balls (like mozzarella sticks) to round out the meal.  We have been eating a ton of veggies lately, but not tonight! (because I wasn't the cook I think....but it was nice to have Matthew and Anna work together!!!)

Ken and I continued to watch West Wing on library DVD.  (I never watched this in the late 90's or early two thousands, but it is pretty good.)  I love the hair (permed and shorter than the average now....just the way I wore my hair, if the hair of my dreams would have actually been the outcome on my actual head) and I love the clothes (except for the giant shoulder pads).
The West Wing cast: Who's had the most successful career since the ...
(The picture isn't from the season we are watching (no perms)...but I like the picture because there is no Rob Lowe, who was very naughty in his personal life before he was on West Wing.  I guess he was replaced by a new actor later, not because of the naughty behavior, but because of a contract dispute or something.)

Josh Lyman & Mandy Hampton | West wing, Moira kelly, 2000s tv shows
(this is Moira Kelly (on the left).... I don't really like her character (very "in your face"), but really, anyone who knew me in the early 90s knows that this is what I wanted my hair to look like.  She also dresses fantastically and her make-up is always spot on (never a goal of mine).

15 years later: 'West Wing' cast members, producer reflect on ...
This is CJ (character name), actress=Allison Janney.  We occasionally watch the show Mom on TV, so it is SO FUN to watch her be this other character. (I do like her character in West Wing, she is the Press Secretary.  Heaven help anyone with that job, ever!!)

3/26/2020

I just learned the my bank substantially lowered the interest rate I earn on my checking/savings account due to the rate cut by the Fed.  (without notification I might add)  It really bugged me, then I got a little perspective, given the amount of money that seems to be lost in the stock market.  (it is like 10,000 times more, not exaggerating)  Why does that make me worry less about my loss in interest?  Because I am crazy and I realize that this too is out of my control.

We just ordered Cold Stone Creamery ice cream to support my friend Dawn who owns the place.

I have not been as productive today as I have been to date during the "shutdown".  I wonder if it is because I know I am working tomorrow?  I promised my accountability buddy (AKA walking buddy) that I will do at least one cupboard today in my kitchen.  I have read a bunch....trying to encourage the kiddos to the same practice and it seems to have worked.  I started making broth and have done some laundry....so I guess I am not a complete sloth.

I am doing a Zoom meeting with friends from Indiana tonight!!  I haven't seen them in person in over 5 years for one (because she lived near my sister in law when my niece was married....change that....we visited Nina's family when Matthew had a campus visit to Saint Louis University), closer to 10 years for the other (St. Louis White House Retreat).  YEAH!!

Here is M. at our Zoom meeting - we are going to try to catch N. next week.

Rihanna - Pon de

 Replay (Internet Version) - YouTube

taken from Wild 94.1 website:

On the heels of her $5 million donation to the United States, Africa and the Caribbean, Rihanna has now donated over $700,000 worth of ventilators to her home country of Barbados.
Rihanna, who is the ambassador for Barbados, has been putting money into those areas affected by COVID-19.
The singer, who is the richest female in the world and is worth $600 million, was recognized by Prime Minister of Barbados, Mia Mottley, who said Rihanna’s donation amounts to $1.4 million in the country’s currency.

I had had heard that Rihanna had made a big donation to help with Covid19, so I Googled her name and found this article.  I am impressed by her generosity and shocked to hear that she is the richest female in the world.  I find this incredible, because although I like "Pon de Replay", I probably couldn't name another one of her songs.  But now I am a big fan of hers for sure!!!  (of course it is crazy that I like Pon de Replay because anyone who knows me well knows I am always saying "turn the music down" not "come Mr. DJ won't you turn the music up".....still it has a great beat!!)
