Goodbye to Facebook

I deleted my Facebook account today.  I was spending too much time "Doomscrolling"  (it is a Covid/political thing where you just keep reading garbage that doesn't bring you to a better place)

I hated reading about people who were going about their life like we weren't living in a pandemic!  I hated the political badmouthing!!

I hated more than I liked....so goodbye!!

11/30/20 Happy Birthday GPASCHILL!!

Today my Dad is 89 years young!

Next year we are going to have a huge party!!  (this year my sister and her husband are with my Dad!)

LOVE YOU LOVE YOU LOVE YOU!!!

11/28/20 More Thanksgiving celebrations

Matthew made fancy French toast.  He prefers fancy to easy, unlike me :0)

Carolyn helped me pick out a Christmas gift for Anna this week (well not the candy, Anna requested these as her favorites), but I made the little cloth make-up bag today to take to show choir competitions (next year) and we found the make-up box for her dresser to keep it all organized.  (Anna doesn't wear make up, this is just for show choir!!!)

Anna helped Ken put up the tree....she wanted to put it up approximately on Halloween!!  Her cousins Lauren and Allie made her the hat a few years ago!!

11/28/20

After much review....we have purchased a treadmill Sole F80!
I include the model only because we tried hard to get a treadmill that will last, so we did a bunch of research and wanted this specific treadmill the most, but were willing to try 2 other brands that were also well recommended.  Unfortunately Norditrack now wants their business model to include a monthly payment so that you can have a trainer to encourage you online.  I just want to walk on a treadmill and watch a TV program, and I certainly don't want to pay a monthly fee!  Bowflex was on a great sale starting today, but at 1:00 am when we checked online there weren't any available in Iowa, Minnesota or Nebraska.....what a terrible terrible advertising scheme from Best Buy!  We should have pulled the trigger on our treadmill a month ago and it would have arrived by now!  We have to wait potentially 50 days before it arrives, but I have done enough searching and treadmills are crazy popular this year due to the pandemic and impossible to find in town (or state).  Lesson learned although I am not exactly sure I could tell you the lesson!

11/26/20 Thankful

Yes - we used a Selfie-stick to take a picture of the whole family!!!  (Ken gave this contraption to Joel a couple of years ago as a joke....it extends your arm, so you can take a picture of everyone together!  We never used it before with the whole family (that I can remember), but pandemics are making other photographers scarce!!)

Figuring out a new game.....felt a lot like Catan
Carolyn made a blueberry pie
Joel was in charge of the scalloped pineapple....my mom's recipe in her handwriting is burned into the wood on the wall!
Matthew cooked the corn (ha ha)....but his big help was organizing this beautiful shelf!  It makes me so happy to see it so clean and tidy!
Anna was in charge of mashing the potatoes.  (so of course it was done early...that girl is motivated)
Cheese ball by Anna and charcuterie board by Carolyn  (it is a millennial thing, my nieces love fancy meat and cheese trays)
It was a lovely day, although with too few people!!! But this is for a short while!!

Because no one is immune.... (yet)

On the 16th our head Pastor started having symptoms for Covid and tested positive a couple of days later.  On the 24th our assistant Pastor tested positive as well.  I do think they were both trying to be safe and our church has been taking many many precautions (masks mandated since Masses started being said in person and small crowds).  I also speculate, unfortunately, that they have had to administer Last Rites to people who were Covid positive.

Please pray for Father Michael and Father James.

11/23/20

Matthew came home yesterday!!!  He made me breakfast before work and dinner for the family!!! (eggs and spinach for breakfast)
Pulled pork....very tender and delicious for dinner!!
Glad to have everyone under one roof.

Happy Birthday to this guy!!!  55 years old today (picture was from the spring with sweet Lilly)

11/21/20

Joel and Anna go full time online starting Monday until at least December 6, but Joel is predicting until after winter break.  I think the biggest impact is that the extra-curriculars stop....Let's be honest, the kids are much more likely to get Covid playing basketball than sitting in class!
more school without shoes!  (first day of school photo repeated!)

I am fine with all online, I actually feel a little safer right now since Iowa is blowing up with Covid!  (of course I don't have little people or special needs people!!)

11/19/20

So happy to have Carolyn home from the dormitory!!!  It was such fun to watch the kids enjoy time with each other.
Here they were gathered to see Joel's new show-choir song.

My newest purchase....After my kids stopped being toddlers, I haven't had much call for a fancy thermometer.  But now we are supposed to take our own temps each morning before work and I didn't want to keep sticking a thermometer in my mouth!  (ironically...germy.....haha!)  This lovely creation was pretty cheap on Amazon.
It started telling temps in Celsius, but I thought, "certainly I can figure this out".  I almost gave in and called Joel, but I stuck to it and converted it to Fahrenheit.  (lucky for Joel, or else he might not be able to ever leave for college)

Trying to stay out of the stores somewhat, so I ordered Joel and Anna new jeans from Kohls and Anna's pair came with the security tag attached....so guess where we get to go...into the store we were trying to avoid!

It is really crazy right now.  I have a nephew, (niece, nephew-in-law and great nephew) and my sister in law's parents all with the disease.  The nephew listed first is asymptomatic and had to test because someone on his sports team tested positive, but the group in ( ) are all related and have symptoms, courtesy of day care.  My in law's parents live in a nursing home.  This was all predicted yet our governor only recently started adding more mitigation as the hospitals begin to be over-run.

I was doing the report for a 20 month old on Friday and came across a telephone note indicating that mom called the doctor on November 11th after the child was exposed to Covid at daycare and they were told to quarantine for 14 days.....yesterday was the 20th....thanks a bunch.  Also the family had to lie to the secretary to get in the door, "has anyone in your family come in contact with anyone with Covid 19 in the last month" and they said "no".  I fell pretty safe, we don't have N95, but we have very thick multilayer masks at work.  Shortly after I saw this child, it was announced that we have to double up again with masks and face shields.  Some people were fussy about it, but I wish I had a facemask on when I saw the snotty nosed little boy!!!

Please pray for everyone affected by this disease.  (Ok, M. and J. did I use the right word (effect vs affect?)

gotta focus on the good!

 IOWA CITY, Iowa —

A University of Iowa professor went viral on Twitter after a student shared their offer to deliver Thanksgiving meals this year.

The student shared a screenshot of an email from the professor that stated they understood some of their students weren't able to go home for the holiday.

"I don't want anyone to feel alone at Thanksgiving, or to miss out on a home-cooked family dinner, so I wanted to invite you to share my Thanksgiving dinner," the professor wrote. "I've talked with my kids and we would be happy to make extra portions of everything and drop it by your apartment or residence (as long as its within 20 mile radius of [redacted].) Since we're all socially distancing we would leave it outside and not have physical contact with you."

The professor provided students with a menu, even including vegan options.

"If you are socially distancing with a roommate or significant other, I'll be happy to drop off two or even three portions," the professor wrote.

The tweet was posted on Thursday morning and has received more than 49,100 retweets, more than 681,900 likes, and 7,000 quote tweets by Friday night.

Users began asking if they could donate, and the student that posted the email said the professor didn't want any donations but was "blown away from the response."

The University of Iowa reposted the tweet saying, "We (heart emoji) the Hawkeye family and our amazing professors."

11/14/20

Yesterday and today Anna and I crocheted baby pumpkins in the spirit of Thanksgiving!  Aren't they the cutest thing?  I think I can give up audiology and sell these full time at about $200 each (haha, clearly a labor of love, because they are very labor intensive!!)

As the weather has turned colder, I have returned to my patchwork crocheted blanket.  This is much harder than I guessed it would be.  Each square takes a considerable time and I only have 25 blocks done (some aren't squared up yet).  Even if I double the squares that I have done, it is going to be a tiny blanket.  Sigh...I am going to keep working at it.  (Ken said it looked like pot holders, but not in the mean way :0)  Maybe it will be done in time to go to the nursing home with us!

Here are squares that are being "blocked".  When I finish them they are a little wonky.  So then I get them damp and make them exact size!  This is my 3rd try at blocking and I definitely have found the best way yet!!

Lest you think this blanket is an ugly idea.....look at how cute the blanket looks with the online direction....of course she is a professional crocheter!!  I have faith that mine will come together.

11/13/20, The Health Department and the Schools begging people to do the right things.

We received a message from our school district indicating that everyone should start making contingency plans if we need to go from Hybrid to remote learning.  No shock as Covid has exploded in Iowa.  They also attached this message:

NOVEMBER 13, 2020  NEWS

A message from our Polk County School Districts

Ascd mask featured

November 13, 2020- The communities of our Polk County school districts are distinctly different in wonderful ways, but we are united today with one very important message. If we want to keep our schools open and staffed, and return all students to the classroom safely, we need everyone’s help in the fight to stop the spread of COVID-19.

More than that, we need to do our part to save the lives of the vulnerable people who live in our neighborhoods and help the staff in our county’s hospitals stay available to everyone who needs help.

We stand in solidarity with the Polk County Health Department and fully endorse this urgent message from Director Helen Eddy.

Ankeny Community School District

Bondurant-Farrar Community School District

Des Moines Independent Community School District

Johnston Community School District

North Polk Community School District

Southeast Polk Community School District

Urbandale Community School District

West Des Moines Community School District

We come to you with a plea, we need your help reducing the spread of COVID-19 in our community. As of November 12, 2020, our positivity rate is 20.8%. The situation is very real, urgent and not slowing down any time soon. We need to change the trajectory of this disease and the impact we are feeling in our community. We are asking you to communicate the information below with your District’s families and staff. Their actions away from school have a big impact on the health of our entire community.

Wear a mask! We cannot stress the importance of wearing a mask. This is the best form of protection against COVID-19. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention have now provided new guidance that wearing a mask can protect BOTH the person wearing the mask and those around you. Wearing a mask will help reduce the spread of COVID-19 in our community.

Stay home. If an individual is sick, whether it is a student or a staff member, stay home. Contact your healthcare provider to discuss your symptoms and see if you need to be tested for COVID-19. If you are waiting for COVID-19 test results, stay home. If you go back to work or school, you can potentially expose everyone around you to COVID-19. Finally, if a student or staff member is in quarantine or isolation, they need to abide by the rules from public health and healthcare providers. When people do not follow the rules of quarantine and isolation, this increases positive cases and hospitalizations.

Reduce community spread. Limiting our contact with others is our new normal. We know it is difficult for family and friends not to see each other especially with the holidays coming up. However, we need to strongly encourage our community to limit who they are around and places they are going. This means limiting going to gatherings, social events and places where people who are not your immediate family are at. The people you are around and the places you go impact your health and your family’s health. We need our students and staff to make smart decisions outside of school and would appreciate your help sharing this message.

It’s past the time to begin taking this virus seriously. This means wearing a mask, staying at home and not attending events or gatherings small or large. The choices we make have consequences. Please help us reduce community spread in Polk County.

Sincerely,

Helen Eddy, Polk County Health Department Director

11/13/20 Friday Fun

My kids had the day off school.  I asked off way back when I received the new school calendar (pre-Covid).  So happy to have these days off with them.

On Tuesday, the little baby I was to test (sedated) at 10 had been fed by her mom at 8, so we couldn't sedate!!  The sedation team nurse was swayed by her cute little smile and we decided we could test her at 2, when it was long enough since she last ate!  So needless to say, when I was done I was rushing.  The earmold I made for her hearing aid must have bounced off my cart as I rushed back to the department so that I could pick up Anna from school.  (I am never quite sure if it is raining in Ankeny when it is a little drizzly in Des Moines...)  So today the kids and I drove to Albia (1 hour and 22 minutes away unfortunately!) to make a new earmold impression.

We got the the meeting spot, but mom didn't show!!  (Joel commented, "I worried this would happen".  To which I replied, "we agreed to meet only yesterday at 12...not even 24 hours ago"...ugh)  So after texting and calling the mom, I called the office and they gave me her address.  They lived practically next door to the meeting place....crazy good!!

Anyway, when we arrived, Joel said, "I bet she is asleep". To which I replied, "She has 2 kids under 2. Who is asleep at 11:00 with 2 kids under 2, when she said that was not their nap time?"  Guess what, she had been sleeping, but not because the babies were - they seemed wide awake when I arrived.  I worry maybe there are drugs involved because she was slow to respond even when her dogs were jumping all over me.  Also given that on Tuesday she forgot to not feed her baby who was to be sedated 2 hours later!  Ugh, but the baby was as cute as cute can be!  Hopefully mom is making good choices.  She isn't my hearing aid patient, but I will have my colleague be on the look-out.

Earmold made, we were down the road to Oskaloosa.  (I Googled "what to do near Albia Iowa" and there was note of a neat little lake in Oskaloosa name Keomah.  We could walk around it in a little under an hour.  (just in case it was cold I didn't want to commit to much longer, but it ended up being beautiful.)

On our way to the lake we stopped at The Brickhouse in Oski.  SOO good.

action shot by Joel (We ate outside even though it was about 38 degrees, I won't eat inside until this pandemic is over!!  It was lovely, with sun and no wind!)
Anna said, "mom, make art out of your straw", so of course we did!!

Here we are at the trailhead.

We found another tree rainbow!

Joel's watch can make maps...very cool!

11/11/20 Online show choir

Show choir has discontinued any in person meetings. (Iowa is going Covid+ crazy because we have a governor with her head in the sand, so this was a very good choice.)  Here are Joel and Anna figuring out her first song via video.  (She loved that I took this photo of course (ha ha), but when I offered to wait around until she was dancing, she just closed the door) 😂😂  I love when they help each other and want to remember such moments!!

The hospitals in the area are putting out pleas to have people be more safe but our governor brags, "you can still go to restaurants, theaters and gyms, some states can't do that".   AS IF you should do any of those things with 5000+ new Covid cases in the state in one day....sigh!  We haven't done any of these things since March (except take-out)

My hospital has cancelled any non-urgent surgeries that require overnight hospitalizations.  The governor keeps saying "I trust Iowans to do the right thing".  Clearly her trust is misplaced.  Every time I turn around I hear of someone else testing positive.  Glad Carolyn will be home soon and out of the dorms.

11/11/20 Happy Veteran's Day

Happy Veteran's Day to my Dad!  (He was around this age when he served in the Korean war.)  There is a picture at my parent's home of him in uniform, but I don' have a copy.

11/9/20

Today we knocked home-schooling out of the park.  I jest.  Anna wants to make sure everyone knows this was not homeschooling!!

Here she is with our baking pumpkin (aka part of our table centerpiece for about a month)

We baked it....cuz it was a baking pumpkin, but to be honest, I don't think Ken noticed that when he bought it.  (Only one other time did I bake a pumpkin...it did not go as well as today!)

Pureed

Drained

Saved seeds to grow baking pumpkins next year.

roasted some seeds

mixed up the bread....notice that our pumpkin was almost exactly the 15 oz we needed
(we took out .1 oz)

seasoned our seeds.....they still just tasted like you were eating old maids from pop-corn or the shells from sunflower seeds.  nice flavor, but no thank you!

This on the other hand was fantastic.  (our one pumpkin made 2 loaves)

Not sure if Anna learned anything, but I learned that she is patient. I would have hurried through, but she followed every direction to the minute (specifically the pumpkin draining)

11/7/20

More raking for Joe, our church fried.  Unfortunately he was diagnosed with Covid.  Say a prayer for him.  We weren't exposed to him, just sad for him.

11/5/20

Anna and I went to rake the leaves for Joe, our elderly fellow parishioner.  As you can imagine, Anna is a big fan of manual labor (as I was at her age I am sure)!!!  Joel will rake some more this weekend as he had to go to soccer "open turf" after school.  (This is not official practice, which can't start yet.....just the boys kicking the ball around I guess.  The weather here is BEAUTIFUL!!)

Anyway after we got home, Joe texted me and said that he is sick and coughing a lot.  Please pray for him!  (I so hope that it isn't Covid as he has C.O.P.D.)

11/04/2020

About a million years ago....exaggeration, but more than 22 years, I gave my friend Beth this lovely Friendship Ball ornament.  Each year we send it back and forth to each other around Christmas time.  Last year it went missing, but she found it when relocating to California and sent it to me in July!

Yesterday, I mailed it off (a little early, but you know how late November gets) with beautiful hand creations from my sister who used to make many jewels.  I think that hobby has slowed down a bit, but these jewels really seem to fit my friend.  She is very down to earth and I think she will like them.
