6/6/20

The day started with a 6:45 walk with my buddy J.  We went super early because then Matthew and I went to give blood at 8:40 downtown Des Moines.  I have been deferred (low iron) so often in the last couple of years, I think I have only been successful once in recent memory.  Anyway....the blood supply is returning to critical demand as elective surgeries have resumed, but all the blood drives have not.  I started taking a multivitamen 3 weeks ago EVERY DAY.  I was not be be defeated and I wasn't.  It was a little rough since the technician missed her first stick, which lead to a slower donation (you have to finish in 20 mintues).  She wiggled the needle and success.  Matthew gave his first donation with success as well.  (for his height he just made the weight requirement but he did it!)

For better or worse, Joel has started umpiring.  Ken went with him, since his location was far from town (bummer).  (Ankeny Little league was cancelled for the year.)  Joel is now umping for tournament baseball, which is a little weird, since he never played travel-ball.  He only had 2 games this weekend, but is hoping for a big upswing (like 6 games a day on the weekend).....we will see!  He umped 8U.  The umpires are not allowed to touch the baseballs (the teams are in charge of this now) and no spitting -  HA HA.

Carolyn received her scholarship from the church.  (Each of the 8 or so kiddos came alone with their parents.)  Normally there is a big senior breakfast, but this was the substitution (also see tomorrow's post)  Not exactly 6 feet social distancing here, but water under the bridge.

Good job Carolyn!!!

I thought this next idea was a great one.  It was a virtual rosary, with each senior on a bead either alone or with a 2nd senior.  We haven't done the rosary yet because Carolyn has been cramming for her math placement test that she only found she had to take before Monday's orientation  (and she works a chunk of Sunday).  Live and learn,  Matthew had taken a placement test, but he took it right after finishing Calculus 2.  Carolyn took statistics this year, so she was basic math rusty. (Plus her wheel-house is writing.)  Now we know so future children will know to study up!
